“Your father said there’s still more to be fulfilled in the prophecy, and it’s all been true so far. That’s good reason to have faith.”
Billy Bannister has bad breath. No, not the kind of bad breath you get after forgetting to brush your teeth. His bad breath is something he has to hide. Something that could be dangerous. His breath is unusually hot. Hot enough to burn something. He’s constantly being teased about it at school, being called ‘Dragon Breath’. One day at school, he meets a girl named Bonnie who also has something to hide: wings. Turns out, they’re half-bloods. Half human, half dragon. Suddenly, their lives are turned upside down and they are caught in the middle of a war against evil. Together, they must escape the slayer who wishes to end their lives, intent on killing all those with dragon blood.
Intended ages according to author/publisher
Raising Dragons, by Bryan Davis is a thrilling modern day fantasy read. The characters feel like real teens and have a strong friendship. I love the allegorical elements Davis has in his story, along with the fantasy elements, like Merlin the wizard, who makes an appearance. According to Bryan Davis, readers as young as 10 years old can read and enjoy Raising Dragons.
Violence
No fighting or violent scenes. There is a kidnapping attempt but it was not depicted in a violent way.
Language
None. No foul or even coarse language.
Relationship/Morality
Billy and Bonnie form a quick relationship that is sweet and brotherly/sisterly, not girlfriend/boyfriend. The only part that bothers me is that they grew so close in only a day.
Magic or Spiritual Realms
Since this is a fantasy novel, there is magic involved. There’s wizards, dragons, and kids with magical powers.
Intense Scenes
The most intense scene in this book is when Billy is fighting the villain, Devin. (pages 286-288)
Positives Messages
That it doesn’t matter what people look like on the outside. There can be good in everyone, if you try and find it.
